The institution of the magazine is Bauer Media Group. Kerrang! is a popular weekly music magazine which has been running for 29 years and now also has it's own radio station, TV music channel and website.
Ideology:
As Kerrang has quite a young average age (22) sometimes the magazine is sometimes used for film, games, mobile technology and government messages. This is because Kerrang! readers are the heaviest music consumers purchasing over 6 albums per month on average (53% more than the national average) and 8 times more likely to spend over £200 a year on albums. The readers are also 5.5 times more likely to attend a rock gig. This would mean that there is a large platform for not just the institution, but advertisers to spread their values throughout the magazine.
Audience:
As Kerrang! has a mean aged audience of 22, the magazine is targeted at young people who listen to rock music, you can tell this as the colour yellow used on the cover for the masthead and main features makes it stand out as its a bold colour and attracts the audience to the important parts of the magazine. This makes it seem like the target audience could be slightly younger as catchy short phrases are used such as 'bite back' and 'the fights, the fury, the future' which would capture the audiences eyes and makes them want to read inside.
Representation:
The cover of the magazine shows the ideology of each individual band that is feature on the cover. With Of Mice & Men it shows the lead singer screaming and reaching forwards. This suggests that they could be a slightly more aggressive group so they would be trying to target people who are interested in this type of rock. As Kerrang! Is aimed at a niche audience that listens to the music and bands that are shown in the magazine, which are mainly metal/rock, the institution would want to attract these people by using the images and fonts that can be seen as more violent and aggressive, this is the kind of image that is associated with this genre of music.
Contents
Audience:
The pictures also take away from the amount of text showing that the magazine could be aiming for a younger target audience. The audience of the contents page is similar to that of the front cover, however this page was created to be more informative than appealing.
Representation:
The contents page informs the audience of everything featured in the magazine, these features will all be related to the magazine genre 'Rock'. The genre of the magazine is also represented by the contents page, by the use of font and colours and the font is bold and clear and the colours black, yellow and white are loud representing similar ideas of rock music.
Double Page Spread
Ideology:
The message that this double page spread is slightly aggressive due to the dogs on the front which are stereotypically quite angry dogs which reflects the genre of music that this band is making.
Audience:
The article itself is set out quite simply and this reflects the fact that there is a slightly younger target audience so for them to want to read it, it would have to be simple and easy for reading so that the reader wouldn't get bored and so they would continue reading.
Representation:
The page is simply used to represent and inform the readers of the band 'Panic! At the Disco' and their comeback. The font and colours are used to represent the genre of the band presented as the font is black and edgy also the colours used are not bright and colourful to signify the nature of the band as it is rock.
